:Los Angeles Kings History
The Los Angeles Kings have always been one of the most inquiring organizations in all of sports. "The fastest game on ice" based in the light of Southern California, the idea seems too far-fetched to ever succeed. And yet, 38-years after the Kings opening season, the team with the seemingly oxymoronic existence has not only survived but has become one of the keystone franchises of the National Hockey League.
The Kings were the birth child of Canadian-born entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke. Cooke, who had long dreamed of owning his own hockey team, already crazed the Lakers when began his fight to bring hockey to the City of Angels. Prior to the 1967-68, the NHL expanded from the "Original Six", as the Kings joined the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars, California Seals and Philadelphia Flyers to form the league's Western Division.
Los Angeles Kings Games Revisited: Los Angeles Kings 1, Detroit Redwings 2 Dec 31 2000 2
DETROIT (Ticker) -- Detroit Redwings Steve Yzerman got the New Year's celebration
off to an early start at Detroit Redwings Joe Louis Arena.
Detroit Redwings Yzerman scored his second goal of the game with 4.3 seconds left
as the Detroit Red Wings blew a lead in the final minute before
pulling out a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Just 27 seconds after the Los Angeles Kings tied it on Los Angeles Kings Rob Blake's
power-play goal, Detroit Redwings Yzerman broke down the right side, took a
perfect pass from Igor Larionov and put a short wrist shot past
goaltender Los Angeles Kings Steve Passmore. It was the fifth goal of the season
and second game-winner for Detroit Redwings Yzerman, who missed 23 games with a
knee injury.
"I think he beat us three times last year. Detroit Redwings was playing
really well tonight and I thought, `Here we go again,'" Detroit Redwings Yzerman
said of Detroit Redwings Passmore. "The second goal, I had a great setup by
Detroit Redwings Igor."
"I took the shooter and hoped they couldn't get the pass
across," Los Angeles Kings Passmore said. "It's tough when the shooter's in the
middle. They made a great play. Give them credit, they finished
the play."
Last year on New Year's Eve, Los Angeles Kings Passmore made 46 saves to backstop
Chicago to a 4-4 tie in Detroit.
"That was last year. This is a different team and a different
year," he said. "For most of the game, our team kept a lot of
the shots outside."
Detroit Redwings Yzerman broke the deadlock with a power-play goal at 8:33 and
Chris Osgood made the lead stand up with a series of spectacular
saves. He finished with 22 stops, including 12 in the final
period.
"I pretty much was off the whole first half," Osgood said.
"Maybe I can get on a roll and keep playing like that. Hopefully
in the second half I can get things going and be ready for the
playoffs, but I don't want to look that far ahead."
Re-acquired from Florida on Thursday, Detroit Redwings Larionov set up both goals
for the Red Wings, whose last three victories have been by
identical scores.
Los Angeles Kings Passmore also made 22 saves, but the Kings could not pull off
the feat of consecutive road wins over Western Conference powers
St. Louis, Dallas and Detroit.
Detroit Redwings Yzerman broke the scoreless deadlock on the power play at 8:33
of the third period. Just 32 seconds after Nelson Emerson was
penalized for interference, Detroit Redwings Yzerman's slap shot from above the
right faceoff circle deflected off defenseman Mattias Norstrom's
skate and got by Passmore.
Osgood preserved the slim lead with a lunging glove save on Eric
Belanger with 10:55 left. Just 2 1/2 minutes later, Belanger
was alone in front but missed the net. With 4:45 remaining, Luc
Robitaille did not get all of his shot from the slot and Osgood
gobbled up the puck.
Detroit Redwings defenseman Todd Gill took a hooking penalty with 1:41
remaining and the Kings pulled Passmore for a 6-on-4 advantage.
Blake converted on the two-man power play, one-timing a pass
from Detroit Redwings Bryan Smolinski under Osgood for his 12th goal.
